occam's razor

In science, when faced with multiple competing hypotheses, lex parsimoniae dictates the one with fewest assumptions ought to be chosen. In mathematics, the simplest solution is always the most elegant. In literature, Polonius from Hamlet said "Brevity is the soul of wit". In the art world, this is best known as minimalism. The beauty of minimalism is its economy, subtlety, and restraint. The visual impact of a minimalist piece is larger in light of its parsimony. I have great respect of minimalists, particularly those in the fashion world. It takes real confidence to trust simplicity will stand out amongst the distractions of colors and shapes. This year's fashion week Jil Sander, Helmut Lang, and CK are solid evidence.
